Issue #001
MY FIRST THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY
Good morning friends,
First of all, HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you and yours! Secondly, thank you for being here. I didn’t intend on today being my first issue, but here we are. Isn’t it wonderfully ironic it launches on Thanksgiving, a Thursday, when our theme is Thoughtful Thursday? Thanksgiving is all about being reflective, grateful, and thoughtful! There is no day that aligns better with the HABITS OF MIND than today. Hopefully it’s a sign of great things to come! Let’s get started before the tryptophan sets in.
The only sliding allowed in my gym 🤣
HABITS OF MIND
Essential Question:
What are the HABITS OF MIND and why do they matter in Physical Education?
What they are:
16 behaviors that promote thoughtful and intelligent responses to challenges.
Skills that help with problem-solving, critical thinking, and effective decision-making.
Habits that encourage persistence, flexibility, and empathy in learning and life.
Tools for fostering lifelong success in both personal and academic contexts.
Why they matter:
They help students build resilience and adapt to challenges in PE and beyond.
Encourage teamwork, empathy, and social-emotional growth during activities.
Promote self-reflection and critical thinking, leading to deeper learning experiences.
Equip students with life skills that extend far beyond the gym, preparing them for success in school and life.
My Two Cents:
Phys Ed teachers should be intentional about teaching and modeling these. I don’t remember how long it’s been since these were introduced in my building, but when they were I thought, “here comes the next thing they’re pushing on us.” While I have seen a fair amount of initiatives come and go over the years, this has been one of the best. As a matter of fact, I’d argue this has benefited me just as much as it has my students. By the way, it’s great for them to see me model these habits (which seems often since teaching young children comes with its set of challenges 🤣). Side Note: I’m PERSISTING in real time as there are so many distractions at the moment.
Something to Think About:
Do you already do this? My guess is, it’s highly likely. If you’re anything like me (and you struggle to articulate your thoughts) a structure like this is a gold mine. If you need that, there are some good resources HERE.
Let’s Continue the Conversation:
I’m in the process of building a fantastic SKOOL community to host the PHYS ED FORUM. My goal is to have that ready by the new year. In the meantime, I’d love to continue the conversation. If you happen to be on X or Facebook you can find me there.
GIGGLES FROM THE GYM
Do you have ropes in your gym:

The funniest thing I heard yesterday:
As a (1st grade) class is leaving the gym - “Face forward, catch a bubble, hands out of your pants” 🤦♂️
How many shoes I tied:
Yesterday - 3
Running total for November - 24
Whew! I persisted! Time for turkey. Seriously, thanks for reading this far! I do hope you decide to join the converstaion somewhere. I only know what I’ve experienced, and I’d love to hear your two cents too!
Gratefully,
